History

The Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce, formerly known as Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce, has a rich and storied history, playing a pivotal role in the economic and social development of the town of Bennington, Vermont and throughout the Southwestern Vermont Region. Founded in 1911, the chamber has remained a steadfast advocate for businesses and a catalyst for community growth for over a century.

The origins of the Bennington Chamber of Commerce can be traced back to the early 20th century when the town's business leaders recognized the need for a unified organization to promote commerce and foster economic prosperity. On September 6th, 1911, a group of enthusiastic entrepreneurs and community members came together to form the Bennington Board of Trade creating the original bylaws. This organization would later evolve into the Bennington Chamber of Commerce on December 12, 1925. The primary objective was to advance the interests of local businesses, attract investment, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

In its early years, the Chamber focused on boosting local trade and supporting various industries such as textiles, lumber, and agriculture. As the years progressed, the Chamber adapted to the changing economic landscape, diversifying its efforts to accommodate new industries and emerging business sectors.

By actively promoting the town's historical significance, natural beauty, and cultural heritage, the Chamber helped establish Bennington as a desirable destination for travelers from all around the country. The Chamber focused efforts major festivals that drove tourism including The Antique Classic Car Show, Moose Fest, The Catamount Prowl and the Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival (Garlic Fest). Additionally, the Chamber worked diligently to support small businesses, organizing events and initiatives to boost local entrepreneurship and foster a strong sense of community.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the Chamber embraced technological advancements to better serve its members and the community at large. Leveraging the internet and digital marketing, the Chamber expanded its reach, attracting a broader audience and promoting the region's offerings to a global market.

In January of 2020, the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce rebranded and renamed itself the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce at the membership annual meeting. This was to better serve the entire region encompassing 17 unique communities in The Shires of Southwestern Vermont.

The Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce has played a vital role in shaping the economic and social landscape of the town especially during the global pandemic and after. Its long and fruitful history is a testament to the dedication of its members and their commitment to fostering growth, promoting prosperity, and strengthening the community. As the region continues to evolve, the Chamber remains a cornerstone of support for businesses and a driving force behind the town's continued success.
