BENNINGTON HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Town Office Conference Room Wednesday, June 9, 2004 - 3:00 p.m. MINUTES MEMBERS PRESENT: Meg Campbell, Vic Rolando, David Aldrich, John Dostal, Tordis Ilg Isselhardt, Sharon Yorke, Anne Bugbee, and Bill Colvin. 1. Minutes of May 26, 2004 Aldrich moved and Rolando seconded that Minutes of May 26, 2004 be approved as presented. Unanimous. 2. DRB Update -HPC reviewed four projects within the Downtown Bennington Design Review District. Please find below the relevant motions pertaining to each project: • Izabella's Eatery - Sign Proposal (351 W. Main Street) Rolando moved and Aldrich seconded that "the HPC support the "Izabella's Eatery" sign proposal as presented." Passed unanimously. • Village Salon & Spa - Sign Permit (546 Main Street) Isselhardt approved and Campbell seconded that HPC support the "Village Salon & Spa" sign proposal as presented." Passed unanimously. • LM Realty - Sign Permit (493 Main Street) Campbell moved and Isselhardt seconded that "the HPC Support the "LM Realty" sign proposal as presented." Passed unanimously. HPC noted that the sign permit application presented was a great example of a thorough application. • SB Collins Inc. - Sign Permit (300 Main Street) Bugbee moved and Isselhardt seconded that "the HPC does not object to the use of lexan in the sign, but, would again request consideration of a more traditional wooden or metal sign". HPC noted they commend SB Collins on their responsiveness to the requests HPC made in its memo dated May 13, 2004. 3. At Risk Assessments Discussion included the Inventory of At-Risk Sites & Structures list that was distributed in the minutes, Campbell questioned whether or not there needed to be any other properties added to the list to be considered for the Preservation Trust grant application. Campbell will draft a letter to the Preservation Trust with the East Main Street "Daisy" Bradford Complex as the property selected. It was suggested to add the Village Cemetery to the Inventory of At- Risk Sites & Structures list. 4. Plaque Program Discussion included the following regarding the Plaque Program: • revisit what the purpose of the Plaque Program and how it relates to HPC goals • in the next packet, Colvin will include a list of the wording that has been sent out previously to business owners • Isselhardt will provide an updated walking tour list at the next HPC meeting 5. Van Nostrand House The following items were discussed regarding ideas as suggested alternatives as an effort to save the building before it is burned down: • Campbell will offer to place an advertisement in the Preservation Trust Newsletter & also contact Eric Gilbertson at Division • Yorke will do research on salvage companies 6. Other Preservation Issues Isselhardt questioned if it would be possible to have a Digital Camera Survey on the Neighborhood Project available for the next Vermont Preservation Conference. Isselhardt will contact Jane Lendway. Dostal would like to add the Montague House to the list of Inventory of At-Risk Sites & Structures Inventory of At-Risk Sites & Structures. Dostal questioned the visibility of the interpretation signage Kiosk located at the Bennington Station. Upcoming Meeting June 30, 2004 Respectfully Submitted William B.
