BENNINGTON HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Town Office Conference Room Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 3:00 p.m. MINUTES MEMBERS PRESENT: Meg Campbell, John Dostal, Tordis Ilg Isselhardt, Victor Rolando, and William Colvin. MEMBERS EXCUSED: David Aldrich, Hugh Baker, Anne Bugbee, and Sharon Yorke. Guests Present: Arthur Haytko and Elaine Haytko 1. Minutes -The word "different" should be inserted in front of the word "neighborhood" on the 3rd line under 1. Neighborhood Assessment Project. Also in that paragraph in the 8th line "Campbell" should be "Knight". -Rolando moved, Dostal seconded the Minutes of June 12, 2003 be approved, as amended. Unanimous. 2. DRB Update -The Haytko's presented their plan to re-side a portion of the Silver Street facade of the Adam's Lock and Security building at 497 Main Street. -Numerous issues regarding the siding and windows were discussed. -The HPC noted its understanding of the Haytkos' rationale for this project, and its appreciation of the Haytkos' willingness to explore options. -The HPC noted that p. 47 of "Time and Place" lists as Not Appropriate, "Covering wall surfaces with metal or vinyl siding, or other synthetic cladding which differs greatly from the original". -It was suggested that perhaps the intact asbestos tiles from other areas of the building could be utilized to replace the damaged ones along Silver Street. -The HPC approved, as presented, the proposal for a new sign for Catamount Access Television at 625 Main Street. 3. Neighborhood Assessment Update -Campbell said she provided Brian Knight with some additional maps. -Isselhardt hoped elements such as topography, zoning, social class, and personal input from residents would be considered. 4. Design Assistance Brochure -The new draft brochure for the Design Assistance Program, prepared by Ted Corbett of BBC, was reviewed. A few suggestions were made. Colvin will pass these along to Corbett. 5. At Risk Sites and Structures -Dostal asked about the Stone Church in North Bennington. Colvin said a potential interested party has arisen, if ownership can be determined with certainty. -Rolando offered to create a new Volume 8 of the Sites and Structures Survey to house information on those properties at-risk. 6. Other Preservation Issues -Isselhardt announced that Ken Graffagninio would be lecturing at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. The topic is Ira Allen. -Isselhardt distributed an old Bennington Region Preservation Trust (BRPT) brochure as well as brochures from the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal. -Rolando distributed a list of archaeology websites.
