Town of Bennington 1998 Annual Report

PARKING TASK FORCE

The Parking Task Force is comprised of Town staff and representatives of other organizations. It advises the Select Board on matters related to the improvement of the quality, quantity, and management of parking in downtown Bennington.

At the end of June, 1998, the Select Board approved a one year moratorium on use of the downtown parking meters. Enforcement is being done by the Police Department, using tire chalking. The Task Force is working with Jay Zwynenburg, and other downtown business owners to collect and provide data to try to determine whether the absence of meters is having an appreciable impact on sales.

The Task Force worked with the Better Bennington Corporation to design and develop the Parksmart Program, an incentive program to save the best parking spaces for customers. The Task Force also worked with the Better Bennington Corporation's Design Committee and the Town Highway Department, to design and install new, larger "Parking" signs to identify the public parking lots.

The Task Force hopes to move forward with some parking lot improvements during 1999, subject to availability of adequate funds. Under the new Vermont Downtown Development Act, the Town is now eligible to apply for some assistance for downtown parking projects, and we hope to be able to take advantage of that opportunity.

Thanks to the Better Bennington Corporation, the Downtown Improvement Commission's, Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Bennington County and to downtown business owners for participating with the Town to address parking issues.

Respectfully submitted,
Helen Whyte, Community Development Director
