Column for December 7, 2009

Hope you all enjoyed the Downtown Tree Lighting and arrival of Santa Claus this past Friday. The Park McCullough House had a lovely visit from the jolly old elf himself on Saturday. If I have the room I'll try to introduce many of the upcoming holiday happenings. Toys for Tots Holiday Party will be held in the Crisp Room at the Veterans Home on December 20th from 1-4pm. Call Bob for more details at 442-0459. Call the Park McCullough for their Holiday Tea information for Dec. 12th. Stop and visit the Bennington Museum Festival of Trees and sign up for the Gala or the Brunch. Go out and make someone happy!!!!

December 9th at VAE please come enjoy a free movie at 7pm. It is the "Moosefest 2009 in Review". Come celebrate our wonderful season of Moose and congratulate each other on a fabulous project for the whole community. All Sponsors, Artists, and the public are invited. Simply call PJ at 447-3311 by 5 pm on December 8th so we can set up enough chairs. There will be a cash bar and desserts. See you there!!!!

B TROOP SEND-OFF
DECEMBER 10th at approximately 1:45 pm please line the route from Main and Depot to the Veterans Home and then out on Route 7 to the Chamber of Commerce Building. You don't want to miss this opportunity to spread some cheer and let our Hometown Heroes know that we wish them well. If you have a flag - bring it. If you have any friends - bring them. Take your lunch hour a bit later on the 10th. Doctor and lawyer offices that close for an hour: how about doing it from 1:30 - 2:30. I know we all have plans and errands to do, but I'm sure these good people and their families would like to have plans too. They are brave and proud to serve and we need to show how much we respect and care for them!
Listen to WBTN AM 1370 for the latest updates. Rich Ryder will let you know Thursday morning if any schedule changes are made by the National Guard. On behalf of the rest of the Hometown Heroes Committee, Mary Morrissey, Rich Ryder, Bob Carter, John Miner, Mary Hamilton, Bob Hannon, and Rev. Robin Greene - we thank you!!!

Chamber Members:

Read your December Newsletter and get your ads in to Bruce Watson of Two Loon Media for the Spring 2010 Area Guide. I'll be sending out the Hospitality Nomination forms and a notice for the D. Ed Moore Breakfast Committee Meeting.

Please let's remember Bruce Watson's mother who passed away last week. We extend our sympathy from everyone here at the Chamber of Commerce.

The Local Rail Committee is sending a letter to Mr. David Dill, Secretary of the Vermont Department of Transportation with a proposal to allow us to help facilitate the connectivity issues by taking on a larger role in advancing the Track #3 study effort. We hope to keep VTrans focus on The Shires (Bennington County) rail needs.

The BBC Board Meeting this week will have Senator Robert Hartwell with briefings on important economic topics. All our legislators have been very helpful. I encourage everyone out there to attend the Chamber Legislative Breakfast on January 18th at Kevin's Restaurant in North Bennington at 7:30am. We want to send our legislators back to Montpelier with a strong message to the state on our behalf.

WBTN had a lovely Founders/Membership Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 3rd at the Bennington Museum. We enjoyed the Festival of Trees as well as the update on the station which continues to exist through the support of the community donations which are totally tax deductible. To continue WBTN needs additional Members and Contributors. Please put them on your holiday list.
