The Better Bennington Corporation presents:
2nd Annual GREAT
PUMPKIN CHALLENGE
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the Great Pumpkin Challenge?
Bennington has challenged Keene, NH -- The Guinness World Record holder for having the most Jack-O'-Lanterns (28,952) in one place. Now we challenge you to help us win! Carve pumpkins, insert 10-hour votive candles, and bring them to downtown Bennington on Saturday, October 27th between 10 AM and 5:30 PM.
Why must it be a 10-hour votive candle?
10-hr votive candles are dripless and really last for 10 hours. So you can light it and forget it, and there's nothing that has to be cleaned up - it's environmentally friendly - unlike oil or some other votives.
Where can I buy the right 10-hour votive candle?
Junque, H. Greenberg & Son, Flower Works, and Hawkins House. Also, on the day of the event 10-hour votives will be sold at both BBC registration areas.
How do I register my pumpkins?
Download a Registration Form, OR any time after Sept. 5th go to the BBC Welcome Center, 215 South St. OR find a form at many downtown Bennington stores. Mail your completed form and check to the BBC at PO Box 704, Bennington, VT 05201 OR bring it to the BBC Welcome Center at 215 South Street.
Where do I bring my pumpkins on the day of the event?
Bring your pumpkins to one of these two locations:
- BBC Welcome Center, 215 South Street. OR
- Bank North Municipal Parking Lot
If you've not pre-registered bring a completed registration form & check with your pumpkins to one of the locations above.
How much does it cost to register?
The registration fee for 1 to 20 pumpkins is $1 per pumpkin
The fee for 21 or more pumpkins is $20 (whether you bring 21 or 201!).
Why do we charge a registration fee for the pumpkins?
To help pay the costs of running this fun event (police overtime, clean-up, port-a-potties, etc). If there are any funds remaining, they will help support year-round activities sponsored by the BBC in downtown Bennington.
What's the Parade all about?
People of all ages are invited to help kickoff this fun event. Carry your pumpkins in the parade or pull them in a wagon or push them in a baby carriage. Wear a pumpkin costume (or not). Meet at the BankNorth parking lot at 3:30PM, and join in the march down Main Street to the Four Corners and back.
Where will the pumpkins be displayed?
Pumpkins will be displayed along Main Street in downtown Bennington.
Will I get my pumpkins back after the event?
The counting will be over at 8:30PM and then you can pick them up, BUT be aware that clean-up starts promptly at 9PM and if you've not picked up your pumpkins by 9PM you may lose them!
How do I volunteer to help on the day of the event?
Great! We really need your help! Please call 802-442-5758 -- leave a message with your name and telephone number and a Pumpkin Committee member will call you back.
Is there any other way I can help?
Yes, you can make donations to help defray the cost of pumpkins for school classes that want to participate. Please complete the registration form, include a donation and send it or drop it off at the BBC Welcome Center.
